सूर्य देव को ग्रहों का राजा माना जाता है. वे 12 राशियों में क्रमवार गोचर करते हैं, उसका शुभ और अशुभ प्रभाव लोगों पर पड़ता है. सूर्य जब देव गुरु बृहस्पति की राशियों मीन और धनु में प्रवेश करते हैं तो उस समय खरमास लग जाता है. यह खरमास अंग्रेजी कैलेंडर के मार्च-अप्रैल और दिसंबर-जनवरी के बीच लगता है.

धार्मिक मान्यताओं के अनुसार, सूर्य देव जब देव गुरु बृहस्पति की राशि में प्रवेश करते हैं तो उनका तेज कम हो जाता है. इस वजह से लोग इस दौरान कोई मांगलिक कार्य नहीं करते हैं. हालांकि यह भी तर्क दिया जाता है ​कि सूर्य देव अपने गुरु की सेवा करने लगते हैं और वे किसी मांगलिक कार्य में उपस्थित नहीं होते हैं. मांगलिक कार्यों में नवग्रहों की पूजा होती है, उनके लिए हवन करते हैं. जब ग्रहों के राजा सूर्य ही उपस्थित नहीं होंगे तो मांगलिक कार्य कैसे होंगे. इस वजह से जब भी सूर्य देव बृहस्पति की राशियों मीन और धनु में आते हैं तो खरमास लग जाता है.
