धार्मिक मान्यताओं के अनुसार, सूर्य देव जब देव गुरु बृहस्पति की राशि में प्रवेश करते हैं तो उनका तेज कम हो जाता है. इस वजह से लोग इस दौरान कोई मांगलिक कार्य नहीं करते हैं. हालांकि यह भी तर्क दिया जाता है ​कि सूर्य देव अपने गुरु की सेवा करने लगते हैं और वे किसी मांगलिक कार्य में उपस्थित नहीं होते हैं. मांगलिक कार्यों में नवग्रहों की पूजा होती है, उनके लिए हवन करते हैं. जब ग्रहों के राजा सूर्य ही उपस्थित नहीं होंगे तो मांगलिक कार्य कैसे होंगे. इस वजह से जब भी सूर्य देव बृहस्पति की राशियों मीन और धनु में आते हैं तो खरमास लग जाता है.

धनु राशि में प्रवेश करते हैं सूर्य

ज्‍योतिष शास्त्र के अनुसार, सूर्य जब गुरु की राशि धनु और मीन में प्रवेश करते हैं तो वो अपने गुरु की सेवा में लग जाते हैं और उनका प्रभाव कम हो जाता है. इसी कारण इस दौरान कोई शुभ कार्य नहीं होता है. मान्यता ये भी है कि खरमास के दौरान गुरु का बल भी कमजोर हो जाता है और शुभ कार्य के वक्‍त सूर्य और गुरु दोनों का ही शुभ स्थिति में होना जरूरी है

ये कार्य रहेंगे वर्जित

• खरमास की अवधि को शुभ समय नहीं माना गया है। यही वजह है कि खरमास के दौरान शुभ कार्य करने की मनाही होती है।
• खरमास में शादी न करने की सलाह दी जाती है।
• इसके अलावा खरमास में कोई संपत्ति खरीदना, घर खरीदना और नया कारोबार शुरू नहीं करना चाहिए।
• इस दौरान गृह प्रवेश नहीं करना चाहिए।
• इस माह में लोगों को नया वाहन नहीं खरीदना चाहिए।
• खरमास के दौरान तामसिक भोजन का सेवन नहीं करना चाहिए।
• खरमास में सूर्य देव की पूजा के दौरान सूर्य देव के मंत्रों का जाप करना चाहिए।
