Maa Brahmacharini Story

According to mythology, Maa Brahmacharini was taken as a daughter in the house of King Himalaya in her previous birth. Then, following the advice of Narad, she performed an extremely difficult penance to get Lord Shankar as her husband.

Due to this difficult penance, she was named Tapascharini i.e. Brahmacharini. He spent one thousand years eating only fruits and roots and for a hundred years he lived only on vegetables.

Keeping a strict fast for a few days, the Goddess endured the terrible hardships of rain and sun under the open sky. After this difficult penance, she continued worshipping Lord Shiva for three thousand years by eating only the fallen leaves that fell on the ground.

After this, she also stopped eating dried Bel leaves and continued to perform penance without water and food for several thousand years. Because she stopped eating even leaves, she got the name ‘Arpana’.

Due to this difficult penance of several thousand years, Brahmacharini Devi’s body became completely emaciated. Seeing her condition, her mother Mena became very sad and to dissuade her from this difficult penance, she called out ‘O Ma’.

Since then, Goddess Brahmacharini also got the name Uma. His penance created an uproar in all three worlds. Gods, sages, saints and sages all started praising Goddess Brahmacharini’s penance, calling it an unprecedented virtuous act.

At last, Grandfather Brahma Ji addressed her through Akashvani and said in a happy voice – ‘O Goddess! Till date no one has done such rigorous penance as you have done. This brilliant act of yours is being appreciated all around.

Your wish will be fulfilled in every way. Lord Chandramouli Shivji will definitely get you as your husband. Now you should stop doing penance and return home, soon your father is coming to call you.

After this, mother returned home and after a few days, according to Brahma’s writings, she got married to Mahadev Shiva.
