धार्मिक दृष्टि से राहु ग्रह का बडा़ महत्व है। पौराणिक कथा के अनुसार, जब समुद्र मंथन से अमृत का कलश निकला तो अमृतपान के लिए देवताओं और असुरों के बीच झगड़ा होने लगा। तब भगवान विष्णु ने मोहिनी का रूप धारण किया और देवताओं और असुरों की दो अलग-अलग पंक्तियों में बिठाया। असुर मोहिनी की सुंदर काया के मोह में आकर सबकुछ भूल गए और उधर, मोहिनी चालाकी से देवताओं को अमृतपान कराने लगी।
इस बीच स्वर्भानु नामक असुर वेश बदलकर देवताओं की पंक्ति में आकर बैठ गया और अमृत के घूँट पीने लगा। तभी सूर्य एवं चंद्रमा ने भगवान विष्णु को उसके राक्षस होने के बारे में बताया। इस पर विष्णु जी ने अपने सुदर्शन चक्र से उसका सिर धड़ से अलग कर दिया और वह दो भागों में बँट गया, ज्योतिष में ये दो भाग राहु (सिर) और केतु (धड़) नामक ग्रह से जाने जाते हैं।
इस प्रकार आप समझ सकते हैं कि धार्मिक दृष्टि के साथ साथ ज्योतिष में राहु ग्रह का महत्व कितना व्यापक है। ज्योतिष शास्त्र के अनुसार ऐसा कहा जाता है कि किसी व्यक्ति की जन्म कुंडली में स्थित 12 भाव उसके संपूर्ण जीवन को दर्शाते हैं और जब उन पर ग्रहों का प्रभाव पड़ता है तो व्यक्ति के जीवन में उसका असर भी दिखाई देता है।
